Challenge:

Architectural design included a delicate exterior trellis structure, large cantilevers, with most of the building suspended over lush landscaping by the support of slender columns.

Solution:

Design of a unique column system of major columns combined with cantilevered walls to form "flag wall" vertical supports. Precast-prestressed concrete joists with cast-in-place slab frame the public, commercial and lobby suspended floor areas. Slender precast columns and beams form the aesthetic exterior trellis system. 1400lb. (640kg) chandeliers in the lobby are supported by hidden precast beams.

Results:

Soon after its opening in 1964, the Kahala Hilton became known as the destination retreat for celebrities and the extremely wealthy. The Kahala Hilton also became the hotel for royalty and heads of state. Today, the Kahala Hotel & Resort remains the epitome of elegance in Honolulu, and is one of Hawaii’s reigning luxury resorts.
