Project Location: |
Honolulu, Hawaii, USA |
Project Scope: |
Structural Engineering and Construction Engineering |
Project Details: |
6-story office building |
Architect: |
Ossipoff Snyder & Rowland Architects |
Challenge: |
Renowned Hawaii architect, Vladimir Ossipoff, designed the façade with a delicate exterior concrete grille shading the interior office spaces. This grille was to measure a mere 2.5 inches in elevation. |
Solution: |
The use of precast concrete sections was implemented to create the distinctive grille. Chemistry of the cement used for casting this grillwork contained a relatively high percentage of tricalcium-aluminate (C3A) which contributed to the high standard of strength, durability, and aesthetic qualities of the grille. |
Results: |
The IBM building is one of the few modern architectural masterpieces remaining in Honolulu. Due to the expert engineering and construction of the concrete grilles, no cracks, spawls, or signs of wear have marred this unique façade, and no repairs were ever needed, keeping it in immaculate condition since 1962. |
