Challenge: |
This small lot located on a dense urban site in the middle of Waikiki posed some obstacles to construction, ingress, egress, and material storage area. |
Solution: |
Use of a novel framing method utilizing precast column "trees" with "branches" to support prestressed beams provided iconic architectural aesthetic and structural strength. |
Results: |
Considerable savings in construction time and cost was realized in the construction of this gem of mid-century modernism, completed in 1960. Subsequently, it was demolished in 1997 to make room for a larger development.
