Project Details:

184 ft. long memorial structure

Challenge:

The memorial structure was designed to span th mid-section of the sunken USS Arizona. Structural supports below were required to avoid contact with the battleship. Minimal contact with the battleship was to occur during construction.

Solution:

A platform supported by large, segmental precast post-tensioned girders resting on 140 ft. deep precast-prestressed concrete piles was constructed over the battleship. Temporary shoring was applied at the center joint. Otherwise, no other contact was made with the battleship

Results:

The USS Arizona Memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day 1969 to commemorate the attack on Pearl Harbor and the men who died defending it. In 1989, the USS Arizona was designated a national historic landmark. Each year, the USS Arizona Memorial welcomes more than 1.4 million visitors from around the world, and remains Hawaii's most popular tourist attraction.
